From Praise To Heaven
365 days a year, 7 days per week and 24 hours each day, members of the U.S. military are on call worldwide, defending the country’s interests and security. In May, through Military Appreciation Month, it is the perfect chance to express gratitude for them and their families for all they do every day.
The born of Military Appreciation Month
Officially designated by Congress in 1999, Military Appreciation Month takes place every year throughout the entire month of May. Every year, the president issues a yearly proclamation reminding Americans to celebrate this patriotic month that pays tribute to those who have sacrificed so much for our liberty.
Although the entire month is designated to honoring past and current military members and their families, you will find several specific military vacations sprinkled during Military Appreciation Month, including Loyalty Day, VE Day, Military Spouse Appreciation Day, Mother's Day, Armed Forces Day, and Memorial Day.
Loyal Day: May 1, 2021
One of the most popular Military Appreciation Month vacations is Loyalty Day, celebrated on May 1. Officially designated by Congress as"a particular day for its reaffirmation of loyalty to the United States and because it recognized this tradition of American freedom," Spartan Day was marked by every U.S. president as 1958 with an official proclamation.
Giving Tuesday Now: May 4, 2021
While most people have already heard about the post-Thanksgiving vacation, Giving Tuesday this season, in light of this COVID-19 pandemic, there will be a day designated as Giving Tuesday Today on May 4. In response to the pandemic, the country is again coming together to give back to their communities - especially those influenced by the virus and those on the front lines battling the illness.
VE Day: May 8, 2021
Towards the conclusion of prolonged, fatal warfare, VE Day, short for"Victory in Europe Day," celebrated just that: the end of World War II on the European front. Since this momentous event in 1945, many planets have celebrated VE Day on May 8 every year. It's become an official holiday in Military Appreciation Month.
2020 has marked the 50th anniversary of VE Day, and unique parties - many of which will now be held virtually or are postponed until the fall due to the COVID-19 pandemic - are projected worldwide.
Military Spouse Appreciation Day: May 7, 2021
Military Spouse Appreciation Day takes place on the Friday before Mother's Day and honors the military partners who sacrifice a lot in support of the service member's assignment. President Ronald Regan first declared "Military Spouse Day" vacation in 1984 before Congress declared that it part of Military Appreciation Month in 1999:
Military spouses play a massive role in taking care of matters while their nearest and dearest are set up and offering a backbone of support and attention during the tough times. These programs have strengthened and enabled military spouses by connecting them to their own social, community, and professional networks.
Armed Forces Day: May 15, 2021
Armed Forces Day was made on August 31, 1949, by then-Secretary of Defense, Louis Johnson, to replace separate Army, Navy, and Air Force Times. It is celebrated on the third Saturday in May, and it's the day Americans celebrate their military forces.
Contrary to Veterans Day (previously observed as Armistice Day-the end of World War I), which honors those who wore the cloth of our country at war, unlike Memorial Day, which celebrates people who died wearing the fabric of our country at war. Armed Forces Day is the appropriate day to honor both men and women currently serving, in addition to people who have previously served and sacrificed to defend our freedom.
Memorial Day: May 24, 2020
The holiday has roots dating back to the post-Civil War age when taxpayers would create spring flower memorials about fallen soldiers’ graves.
In contemporary history, the vacation is also frequently cited as the unofficial beginning of summertime. Several families decide to pay tribute to fallen service members by seeing veterans' cemeteries or memorials, such as the Vietnam or World War II Memorials in Washington, D.C. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many will be choosing to mark this army holiday from the safety of their home this year.
